What is acute myeloid leukemia?

Leukemia occurs when the bone marrow, the tissue inside our bones, begins to produce blood cells in an unbalanced and uncontrolled way. In other words, it starts to build immature and abnormal cells that take the place of other blood cells in the marrow, blood and lymphatic system.

There are four types of leukemia, with acute myeloid leukemia being the most common type of leukemia in adults. But even so, it is considered a rare cancer, especially in people under 45 years of age, like the influencer. The average age of patients with the disease is 68 years.

This type of cancer has this name because it affects myeloid cells, which give rise to leukocytes, platelets and red blood cells. The term “acute” indicates that this is an aggressive form of leukemia in which diseased cells multiply rapidly.

As it is a very aggressive disease, acute myeloid leukemia must be treated as soon as the diagnosis is made. Treatment varies according to the patient’s age, as well as cytogenetic and molecular risk factors. The options are: chemotherapy, targeted therapy and bone marrow transplant.
