Julia Roberts rarely acts in films that have this weight and pessimistic view of the world. In the latest film, she plays a gloomy middle-aged mother and marketing expert, and in several scenes her character utters the line: “I really hate people.” “Leave the World Behind” is a melancholic yet tense thriller unlike any other.
A seemingly normal American family is preparing to escape from New York and rent a luxurious mansion on Long Island. An idyllic vacation turns into a nightmare, with a series of strange events that portend something bad. Some bad comments about the film, which lasts a little more than two hours, are about the “stretched action” reminiscent of “Waiting for Godot”. During the first hour, apart from a huge cargo ship that approaches the bathers at an unexpected speed and then runs aground on the beach, the signals on the electronic devices are turned off and the agitated animals that suddenly appear near the house, no clear conclusion can be made about the plot.

If you persevere until the second hour of the movie, it will start to unravel a systematic conspiracy against Americawhich, as stated in one part, “made a lot of enemies over the years.”Sometimes it can be a nice, or cathartic, experience to see a movie that tells us it’s okay to worry“, according to Variety Fair. “Leave the World Behind” does not skimp on its darkness and ominousness, and what leaves you speechless is the idea of destroying America in a few steps that are “the most economical and effective”.
The film is adapted from the best-selling book by Ruman Alam, directed by Sam Esmail, with some changes. While the book is an account of elegant psychology, the film offers answers to one of America’s potential “doomsday” scenarios. The cast includes Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, the great Mahershal Ali and Kevin Bacon, who plays the character of a man who is ready for disaster, the so-called “doomsday prepper”. A story that reminds us, over and over, that the world has no empathy for these people, or any of us, or the conspiracy theorists who predict dire scenarios.
For the most part, the scenario seems terribly possible, according to some criticswho state that the course of life can be played out before our eyes, in this way – noticeably, only after it is already too late.
