Li Hui Launches Third Round of Shuttle Diplomacy for Ukraine Crisis
Li Hui, the Chinese government’s special representative for Eurasian affairs, recently embarked on the third round of shuttle diplomacy aimed at achieving a political settlement for the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. According to a statement released on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on May 10, 2024, Li Hui conducted a series of meetings with key officials from Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
During his visits, Li Hui met with high-ranking officials, including Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Akchapa Al Khaled, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Al Aiban, Saudi Minister of State and National Security Advisor Karkash, and Foreign Affairs Advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates, Lim. In addition to these meetings, Li Hui also engaged in discussions with officials from Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and other countries to address the Ukraine crisis.
Throughout the diplomatic efforts, China put forward several key propositions aimed at de-escalating the situation and promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict. These propositions included calls for compliance with the “three principles” to prevent further escalation of the conflict, promoting dialogue and negotiation as the only feasible solution, increasing humanitarian assistance to affected areas, opposing the use of nuclear and other weapons, and supporting international cooperation in various sectors.
All parties involved in the discussions expressed agreement with China’s propositions and pledged to continue communication and coordination to support efforts towards peace and stability in the region. The international community was also called upon to play a constructive role in promoting dialogue and ceasefire in Ukraine.
As the shuttle diplomacy efforts continue, Li Hui and the Chinese government remain committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis. The ongoing dialogue and cooperation with various stakeholders demonstrate China’s dedication to contributing to peace and stability in the region.
