Surabaya, InfoPublik – The Indonesian U-23 National Team had to settle for fourth place in the Qatar U-23 Asian Cup, after losing 1-2 to the Iraq U-23 National Team, but Indonesia still has a chance to qualify for the 2024 Olympics with the AFC-CAF playoff against Guinea U-23.

The 2024 U-23 Asian Cup will be the final qualifying series for the 2024 Olympics. Uzbekistan, Japan and Iraq are certain to be Asia’s representatives at the 2024 Olympics. “Indonesia still has a chance to qualify for the 2024 Olympics by winning the playoff against Guinea, which will be contested in one week,” said the Acting Governor of East Java, Adhy Karyono after watching the Indonesia U-23 vs Iraq U-23 match at the Grahadi State Building, Friday (3/ 5/2024) early morning.

Even though the U-23 National Team lost to Iraq U-23, according to the Acting Governor, the National Team played well and even controlled the game. “This result is quite disappointing, because the national team played better compared to when they played against Uzbekistan,” said the Acting Governor.

The match for third place in the U-23 Asian Cup was held at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium, Doha, Qatar, Thursday (2/5/2024) evening. On this occasion, the Indonesian U-23 national team managed to take the lead through Ivar Jenner’s rocket kick in the 19th minute.

Ivar Jenner fired a hard kick from outside the penalty box. The ball from Ivar Jenner’s kick went smoothly into the bottom left corner of the Iraqi goal guarded by Hussein Hasan.

But unfortunately, the superiority of the Indonesian U-23 national team did not last long. Iraq successfully scored the equalizing goal in the 27th minute. The goal came from a corner kick taken by Muntadher Mohammed. Ernando Ari came out and tried to ward off the ball. The wild ball was then headed by Nihad Mohammed and hit Zaid Tahseen before the goal was scored. Score 1-1 closed the first half.

At the start of the second half, Marselino Ferdinan fell to the ground in pain after being fouled by Karrar Mohammed in the 50th minute. The player with back number 7 immediately received treatment and returned to playing. The ball from Marselino Ferdinan’s kick was still not on target in the 54th minute. Until the 55th minute, the Indonesian U-23 national team was in control of the game with 55 percent ball control compared to Iraq’s 45.

The Indonesian U-23 National Team got a chance through Pratam Arhan’s long throw in the 72nd minute. However, the ball was blocked by the Iraqi goalkeeper, Hussein.

Nathan made a brilliant save in the 73rd minute. Nathan was able to sweep the ball from an Iraqi player’s kick towards the Indonesian U-23 national team’s goal which Ernando Ari had left behind.

Rafael Struick’s shot in the 75th minute still soared high above the Iraqi goal. Shin Tae-yong entered two new forces in the 79th minute. Komang Teguh and Fajar were introduced to replace Rio Fahmi and Kelly Sroyer. No goals were scored throughout the second half, the match continued into extra time. Muntadher Abdulammer’s hard kick in the 93rd minute still bounced over the Indonesian U-23 national team’s goal.

Two minutes later, Amin Al-Hamawi’s header was not on target. Ernando Ari’s goal finally broke in the 96th minute. Ali Jasim, who escaped the offside trap, was able to fire a hard kick that passed Ernando Ari’s legs. Iraq leads 2-1 over the Indonesian U-23 national team. This score lasted until the first half of extra time ended.

Marselino’s shot still bounced over the Iraqi goal in the 107th minute. The Indonesian U-23 national team failed to score a goal in the remaining time. Iraq managed to win the match with a score of 2-1. This result made Shin Tae-yong’s team end their struggle in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup in fourth place.

This achievement certainly deserves appreciation. The reason is, the Indonesian U-23 national team has exceeded the target given. Apart from that, the Garuda Muda squad also showed good performances, including against Iraq.
