Atletico almost took the lead in the 8th minute after Alvaro Morata fired a shot into the left corner of Madrid’s goal, but Andriy Lunin appeared alert to block the 31-year-old striker’s shot.

Goal! Madrid opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Atletico’s back line error led to a counterattack for Madrid. Brahim Diaz was in the right position to receive the rebound, then dribbled the ball before breaking into Oblak’s goal.

Atletico were stung and tried to equalize the score, but Axel Witsel’s header in the 23rd minute was blocked by Lunin. Meanwhile, Stefan Savic’s header a minute later went wide on the left side of the goal. Score 1-0 closed the first half.
