Mainland Chinese Students and Teachers Visit Taiwan for Cultural Exchange
Taiwan is set to welcome a delegation of 36 teachers and students from five prestigious mainland Chinese universities. This visit, organized by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation for Culture and Education, marks the first time in over three years that a mainland university has arranged a trip to Taiwan.
Hao Ping, Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University, will lead representatives from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, and Hunan University during their stay in Taiwan from the 15th to the 23rd of this month.
Chen Binhua, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, expressed his support and highlighted the positive significance of this visit in promoting two-way exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. He stated that the mainland greatly encourages cross-strait youths to strengthen exchanges, enhance understanding, and learn from each other.
During their time in Taiwan, the mainland delegation will engage with universities like National Taiwan University, National Chengchi University, Chinese Culture University, and Donghua University. They will also have the opportunity to explore various counties and cities including Taipei, Taichung, New Taipei, Hsinchu, and Hualien.
The invitation extended by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation stirred discussions and prompted Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to request explanations from five universities, including National Taiwan University, regarding the necessity of these exchanges and ensuring security guarantees.
In response to the concerns raised, the Taiwan Immigration Agency evaluated the situation and ultimately approved the visit, as confirmed in a press release. The joint review committee resolved the issue, granting permission for mainland Chinese students and teachers to participate in the cultural exchange facilitated by the Ma Ying-jeou Cultural and Educational Foundation.
This visit not only deepens cross-strait ties but also serves as a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange, fostering greater understanding and collaboration between universities on both sides. It is hoped that this visit will further contribute to the restoration and enhancement of bilateral exchanges in the future.
