There were some dramatic final minutes of Saturday’s duel at Old Trafford. After Calvin Bassey sent Fulham into the lead after just over an hour, Harry Maguire equalized at 1-1 in the 89th minute. That looked set to be the result, but six minutes into added time, Fulham had a counter-attacking opportunity.

They took care of that when Iwobi got the ball inside the field and put the ball into the goal behind United goalkeeper Andre Onana.

– It is a big victory for us, and it was deserved. The best team won today, Fulham manager Marco Silva told the BBC.

– It is fantastic to come here and win against an in-form team. It feels great for our supporters, who supported us from the first to the last whistle.

Simple mistake

December 30 was the last time United lost in the league. Then Nottingham Forest became too strong with a 2-1 victory. Since then, Erik ten Hag’s men had won six out of seven games and fought their way back into the race for a top-four finish.

Manager Erik ten Hag believes that the team fell on a simple mistake.

– Fulham had a throw-in in the corner. We pressed them, but a player was in the wrong position. We let them get away and we shouldn’t have done that, he told the BBC.

– We showed strength of character when we came back. We deserved the equalizer and went for the win, but then we made that mistake.

Way up

With Saturday’s defeat, eight points separate Aston Villa in fourth place. Tottenham are three points ahead of United with one game less played. Fulham is in 12th place.

United talent Omari Forson (19) played only his second PL game in the absence of star striker Rasmus Højlund. The Dane is expected to miss a few weeks of football.
