A penalty shootout was needed to decide who will be United’s next opponent in the FA Cup.

A couple of hours before Manchester United knocked Newport out of the FA Cup a week and a half ago, it became clear that Nottingham Forest or Bristol City would be the club’s next opponents in the traditional tournament.

The two teams met for a rematch at the City Ground on Wednesday night, and after 120 minutes of football, Forest held their nerves best in the penalty shootout.

Divock Origi put the hosts in the lead after eight minutes, but Jason Knight leveled the score at 1-1 before the quarter was over.

Neither team was able to decide the match during regular time or extra time, and a penalty shootout was thus required.

There, the Premier League team was the strongest, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s crew can thus look forward to another clash against Erik ten Hags United. As recently as Christmas, the two teams met, also at Forest’s home ground. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for the hosts.

The match between Forest and United at the City Ground will be played on Wednesday 28 February with kick-off at 20.45 Scandinavian time.
