Masanobu Ando is a writer who is extremely conscious of “Thanatos” (death drive).

It may sometimes appear as a destructive impulse. On the other hand, Ando, ​​who is also an actor, seems to be adept at controlling “Thanatos” through his acting.

Those who have “Thanatos” in their core may live in a delicate balance between the “impulse to destroy” and “controlling impulses.” I think movie director Takeshi Kitano is probably a similar person. It is no coincidence that Ando’s first leading role was in a Kitano film.

People may be attracted to Ando’s honesty and pure passion for creation, and his passionate behavior may give the impression that he is “a boyish person.” But that’s just one side of him. He is fascinated by “Thanatos,” and there is something like an “old sage” who looks at the contrast between the sparkle of life (eros) and its gradual decay, and its timeline from the side.

He is both “cheerful” and “depressed” at the same time. Rather than a yin-yang rotation like “depression after pleasure” or “pleasure after melancholy,” he always feels two contradictory emotions at the same time. I think Ando’s special feature is these two colors. The title he gives to his photographic works, “Gloomy Paradise,” says it all.

Ando always uses the phrase “view of life and death.” For him, these words are “death” and “life,” “solitude” and “trust,” “human desolation” and “human beauty,” and “the flow of time” and its end. It is “the end of time.”

These two contradictory contrasts are omnipresent in his works.

It shows us the abyss of “unclear richness” that only those who have contradictory thoughts can reach.
