tirto.id – Ahead of the 2024 elections, the track records of a number of figures who have served as ministers of the Republic of Indonesia are in the public spotlight, one of which is the former Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), Marty Natalegawa.

Marty Natalegawa was trusted to fill strategic positions during President SBY’s administration. Initially, Marty was appointed as Indonesian Ambassador to Great Britain from 11 November 2005 to 5 September 2023.

Then, he served as Indonesia’s Permanent Envoy to the United Nations (UN) from 5 September 2007 to 22 October 2009.

Furthermore, in the second period of SBY’s leadership, in the United Indonesia Cabinet II, Marty was trusted to be Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) for five full years, namely from 22 October 2009 to 20 October 2014.

After SBY completed his duties as President and stepped down from the State Palace, the name Marty Natalegawa rarely appeared in public. Not a few are curious about his current position as well as his family and personal life.

Marty Natalegawa’s Track Record and Current Position

Marty Natalegawa’s full name is Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa, he was born on March 22 1963 in Bandung, West Java. He is the youngest child of Sonson Natalegawa and Siti Komariyah Natalegawa.

Marty has a wife named Sranya Bamrungphong who comes from Thailand, and the two of them have three children. They are Raden Siti Annisa Nadia Natalegawa, Raden Mohammad Anantha Prasetya Natalegawa, and Raden Mohammad Andreyka Ariif Natalegawa.

Marty spent much of his youth abroad, when he was a child he accompanied his father on his assignment as a Bank Indonesia employee to Tokyo, Japan. After his father finished his assignment, Marty lived in Jakarta.

He completed elementary school at SD Kris Jakarta in 1974. Then, after graduating from elementary school, his parents immediately sent him to Singapore, where he studied at the Singapore International School.

Next, he moved to junior high school boarding school Ellesmere College and Concord College, England in 1981. In England, Marty completed his education to master’s level.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences, University of London in 1984. Then, he earned a Master of Philosophy in International Relations, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University in 1985.

Meanwhile, he completed his highest education in Australia. He received a Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations from the Australian National University, Australia in 1993.

Furthermore, in 2013 Marty together with the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bob Carr, was awarded a doctorate honoris causa in International Relations from Macquarie University, Australia.

Before joining the SBY government, he started his career as a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2002 to 2005.

During his career as a diplomat, Marty was recorded as having a number of achievements, he once served as President of the UN Security Council. Next, he served as head of the country’s delegation to several international conferences such as the UN, OIC, and ASEAN.

Marty was also Indonesia’s envoy to the UN Security Council in the East Timor trilateral dialogue and was appointed Director General of ASEAN cooperation from 2003 to 2005.

Not only that, he is also trusted to be a member of the UN high-level panel on the Global Response to the Health Crisis. The panel team consists of six people from various countries and is led by the President of the Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.

After SBY completed his duties, Marty Natalegawa was no longer included in the cabinet for the next period. Based on the Bank Indonesia (BI) website, currently Marty is on the BI Honorary Board.

Marty is known to have served as Independent Director of Jardine Cycle & Carriage from 2015 until now. He also serves as Independent Commissioner of Prudential Life Assurance (Prudential Indonesia) from 2016 until now.
