The memorial to Captain James Cook was also hit. The episodes on the eve of Australia Day
(LaPresse) The statue of Queen Victoria and that of the British explorer and cartographer, Captain James Cook, were vandalized in Melbourne. The incident occurred on the eve of Australia’s national holiday. The Queen’s statue was daubed in red while Cook’s was sawn off at the ankles and left on the adjacent lawn. The commemorative pedestal on which the statue of the latter rested was also vandalised: in fact, the writing “the colony will fall” was painted on it. (LaPresse/Ap)
