The Argentine poked the ball into the goal in the 92nd minute after a brilliant cross from Jordi Alba. The goal is Messi’s first of the season, which kicked off last week.
Messi and Alba weren’t the only ex-Barcelona players on the pitch. Youngster Ricki Puig and Uruguayan veteran Martín Cáceres were both in the starting lineup for the hosts from Los Angeles. At Inter Miami, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets started together with the aforementioned Messi and Alba.
Puig, who will embark on his third season in MLS following his move from Barcelona in 2022, had the opportunity to send the whites into the lead after just 13 minutes when the hosts were awarded a penalty. However, Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender made his way the right way and saved the Spaniard’s penalty kick.
15 minutes before the end, Serbian Dejan Joveljic had to stand all alone in the empty box and wide to score the opening goal. The 24-year-old looked set to be the match-winner before Messi scored the equalizer in injury time.
Inter Miami thus rises to the top of the table in MLS, but with one game more played than almost all teams.
