This year too, stars from all over the world will be able to climb the famous steps to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The event, also known as the “Fashion Oscars,” is all about fashion. It is considered the most prestigious and glamorous fashion event in the world.

What is the Met Gala?
The Met Gala is an annual charity event to benefit the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met for short) in New York City and takes place on the occasion of the opening of the annual fashion exhibition.
The event is organized by the US “Vogue” under the direction of editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. An evening where designers, models and Hollywood stars come together in the most extravagant looks of the year. Anyone who receives an invitation to the Met Gala has made it to the top of high society.
Every year, relevant personalities are invited from a wide range of areas such as fashion, film, television, theater, music, business, sport, social media and politics.
The History of the Met Gala
The Met Gala was founded in 1948 by fashion journalist Eleanor Lambert. Even then, it served as a fundraiser for the newly founded Costume Institute.
Initially, mainly members of New York’s high society or the city’s fashion industry were invited to the gala. The event took place at various locations in Manhattan from 1948 to 1971.
Diana Vreeland was appointed consultant to the Costume Institute in 1972. This meant that prominent participants such as Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Elton John, Madonna and Cher were invited for the first time. It was also during this time that a theme for the design of the Metropolitan Museum of Art was determined for the first time.

With the exception of 2000 and 2002, the Met Gala has been held every year since its inception.

When and where does the Met Gala take place?
The “Fashion Oscars” will also take place on the first Monday in May this year. This year the event falls on May 6, 2024.
Since 1972, the Met Gala has been held at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Rules and procedure of the Met Gala
Strict “No Phone” and “No Social Media” rules apply at the Met Gala. Only a few celebrities’ toilet selfies occasionally reach the public after the event.
Little is known about the process. Guests arrive during cocktail hour, walk the red carpet, and then tour the museum’s special themed exhibit. There will also be a concert during the dinner party.
Who’s coming to this year’s Met Gala?
Typically around 600 people take part in the event. The guest list is top secret until the evening before the gala. You can always expect an enormous line-up of stars.
Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Anna Wintour serve as official co-chairs this year. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson are invited as honorary chairs of the evening.

What is the theme of the Met Gala 2024?
This year’s Costume Institute spring exhibition is celebrated with the fairytale title “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” Aimed at neglected or almost forgotten fashion.
250 pieces from the museum’s permanent collection, which can be classified from the 17th to the 21st century, will be presented. Topics such as land, sea and sky are taken up in order to be able to engage intensively and deeply with the masterpieces.
The exhibition itself will be very modern this year. With the help of augmented reality, light projections, computer-generated images, video animations and soundscapes, the materials appear almost alive.

The Met Gala 2024 dress code
This year’s dress code was also announced in February 2024. The dress code is: “The Garden of Time” and is based on the short story of the same name by the British writer James Graham Ballard.

The short story is about an aristocratic couple who live in a romantic villa surrounded by an enchanting garden. An angry mob is raging outside. But every time the Count picks a beautiful flower from his magical garden, time seems to turn back.
The threat from outside is temporarily repelled – until finally there are no flowers left. The story comes to an end when the angry mob storms the villa, which has been transformed into a dilapidated property with a neglected garden in which thorny deadly nightshades entwine a statue of the elite couple.
For the Met Gala, this means fairytale-like and nature-loving fashion. Floral patterns, embroidery or ruffles should not be missing to match the theme and spring.
