More awards for “Oppenheimer” – NRK Culture and entertainment

“Oppenheimer” is the big winner of the evening with seven Bafta awards, followed by “Poor Things” with five, writes the BBC.

The Bafta, or British Academy Film Awards were handed out tonight for the 77th time. Bafta is the British answer to the Oscars.

Won his first Bafta award

Shortly after the award ceremony began, “Oppenheimer” won its first prize. A short time later, the blockbuster ran away with another award, when Robert Downey Jr. was named best supporting actor.

The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, won one of the highest awards, namely best director.

– I have so many people to thank for this, an incredible ensemble … an incredible crew, Nolan said in his acceptance speech. This is the first time he has won a Bafta.

“Oppenheimer” with the most nominations

Before the awards, Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster was at the very top of the list with the most nominations.

The historical drama with Cillian Murphy in the role of the father of the atomic bomb, was nominated in 13 categories. With 13 awards, it would break a 54-year-old record. It didn’t go quite so well, but it was still a party night for the Americans.

Cillian Murphy won the award for Best Actor.

– Oh boy. Holy moly, he said in his acceptance speech. Murphy thanked director Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for seeing something in him that he hadn’t seen in himself.

“Oppenheimer”, with Cillian Murphy in the lead role, was nominated in 13 categories.

Zero to “Barbie”

The award for best female lead went to Emma Stone for her performance in the gothic comedy “Poor Things”. This film received a total of eleven nominations.

“Barbie” was nominated for five awards, but the team had to go home empty-handed.

Led the show for the first time

Scottish actor David Tennant hosted the prestigious awards ceremony for the first time. Tennant is best known for playing the Doctor in the British science fiction series “Doctor Who”.

As president of Bafta, Prince William was also present during the award ceremony. Prince William arrived at the Royal Festival Hall without Princess Kate, as the princess is on sick leave following an operation.
