First carried out in the investigation into the murder of Ambassador Luca Attanasio in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Almost a year after the ambush in which he lost his life together with his escort Vittorio Iacovacci and driver Mustafa Milambo, the North Kivu police announced the arrest of the two alleged killers of the diplomat killed on 22 February. They wanted to kidnap him for a million dollar ransom.
The arrested are part of a rebel group, the two are allegedly linked to the murder but they are not the first suspects, the police specified.
The two men, who were brought before the province’s military governor where they were also confronted with reporters, apparently planned a million-dollar ransom, authorities say.
It is still unclear when the arrest took place or when the trial will begin. The chief of suspects would be called Aspirant and remains a fugitive, police say. Which presented four other men accused of attacks on aid workers in the region.
Italy formally asked the UN to open an investigation to ascertain, among other things, whether UN security conditions were sufficient for the mission. The UN replied that the road had been cleared for the journey without security escorts or armed vehicles. The convoy traveled between Goma and Rutshuru, where the ambassador was to visit a school for a project aimed at students.
