[NTD, Beijing, January 31, 2022]NATO has no plans to deploy combat troops in non-member Ukraine if Russia invades Ukraine, the secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization said today. The British foreign secretary also said that if Ukraine is attacked, the possibility of British troops joining the fight is slim.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg was asked in an interview with the BBC whether he would rule out sending troops to Ukraine should Russia invade Ukraine. He responded: “We have no plans to deploy combat troops in Ukraine… We are focusing on providing (Ukrainian) support.”
“Being officially a member of NATO or, like Ukraine, being a strong and highly valued partner of NATO are two different things, there’s no question about that,” Stoltenberg said.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss also told the BBC that it was “very likely” that Russia was preparing to invade Ukraine.
However, in response to the question of whether the United Kingdom might send troops to Ukraine, Truss said: “It is almost impossible for this situation to happen. The point is to ensure that the Ukrainian military has all the assistance we can provide.”
British Prime Minister Johnson also tweeted on the 30th that the situation on the Ukrainian-Russian border is “increasingly worrying. I continue to urge Russia to participate in negotiations and avoid a rash and catastrophic invasion.”
