It is a “terrorist” act carried out in a supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand, by a man who has stabbed six people in the past few hours. This was said by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The man was shot by the police and died. “What happened today was despicable, hateful, wrong,” underlined the premier, describing the attacker as a citizen of Sri Lanka who arrived in New Zealand in 2011. The attack is also believed to be inspired by Isis. Three of the injured are in critical condition.
In videos posted on social media, some supermarket customers can be seen sounding the alarm for the presence of “someone with a knife” and you can hear the gunshots fired by the police. The bomber was already known to the New Zealand police, but by law there were no conditions for him to be kept in prison. Auckland is in a rigorous lockdown to fight a coronavirus outbreak. Thus, most businesses are closed and people are generally only allowed to leave the house for shopping, for medical purposes or for exercise.
