Aiming for faster drainage in the event of flooding caused by heavy rain, the Public Services Department, in partnership with the Works and Infrastructure Department, cleans and unblocks drains. Around 1,200 manholes are cleaned every month, according to the Secretary of Public Services, Simone Muniz.

“Our team opens the manhole and removes the trash and if it is blocked, the Department of Public Works uses the Sewer Jet truck to clear the drains to the galleries. Preventive work prevents flooding on the roads, but the volume of rubbish that has been found inside the drains has drawn attention”, says Simone, who is also responsible for the Undersecretariat of Public Cleaning, Squares and Gardens.

“That’s why it’s so important not to throw trash on the street, the importance of making everyone aware of throwing their trash in the trash cans, because there’s always one nearby and, even if there isn’t, the person could be putting it in the car or in a bag in the street. bag, but never throw it in the street, because then we ourselves are the ones who suffer from flooding and floods. It seems like we are talking about something so silly, but it is serious and of great relevance to everyone”, highlights Simone.

The secretary explains that whenever there is a cleaning effort in the neighborhoods, the street cleaning teams clean the manholes, storm drains and all this drainage, at least the entrance that goes to the rainwater networks is unobstructed. And if necessary, the situation is passed on to the Department of Works to identify where the networks need to be unblocked.

The Secretary of Works and Infrastructure, Fábio Ribeiro, echoes Simone. “When people discard garbage on public roads, wind and rain take these materials into the drainage system. Campos is very large and there are thousands of streets and avenues with extensive rainwater drainage networks to receive maintenance. If there is no awareness among the population to cooperate by not disposing of rubbish on the streets, it will become increasingly difficult to manage the cleanliness. Therefore, we ask that everyone be aware that throwing garbage in the streets causes problems for pedestrians, cyclists, traders and residents”, he warns.
