OITAF Lombardy among the most virtuous Italian regions in food transport – Current affairs

42 million tonnes of fresh food arrive on Lombardy tables every year, including agricultural, food, fishing and aquaculture products, while around 160,000 tonnes of frozen foods are consumed every year in the region (ISTAT data 2019 and 2021, the latest available).

This data will be presented during the Milan stop of Frigo’N’Motion, the tour organized by OITAF – Interdisciplinary Food and Drug Observatory dedicated to controlled temperature transport, which represents a cornerstone for food safety. The event will take place on May 9th at the Sala Manzoni of the Milan Fair, within Transpotec Logitec, the transport and logistics exhibition.

The transport of food to Italian tables takes place thanks to a fleet of temperature-controlled vehicles, analyzed and documented by OITAF in the ATP Transport White Book using data from the Civil Motorization Office, divided by region.

In Lombardy, temperature-controlled vehicles amount to 13,454, of which 32% are registered in the province of Milan. Among these, 57% are light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and 43% medium and large commercial vehicles (M-HCVs).

Lombardy stands out as one of the most advanced regions in Italy in temperature-controlled transport. 51% of LCVs and 61% of M-HCVs are classified Euro 5 and Euro 6, compared to the national average of 40% for LCVs and 50% for M-HCVs. Over 50% of vehicles in circulation in Lombardy were registered after 2009 and are equipped with advanced technologies for the treatment of exhaust gases, improving safety and reducing CO2 emissions.

The temperature-controlled towed vehicles registered in the region are 1,986, of which 1,797 semi-trailers and 189 trailers. Also in this case, Lombardy shows a positive trend compared to the national average, with an average age of the towed fleet of 15 years, compared to a national average of 16.4 years.
