Omar Merlo: “I made the decision to retire from football… Chile changed my life forever”

Omar Merlo (36), a figure from the 2012 Huachipato champion, announced through his social networks that he will retire from professional football. In addition to the “acero” team and the Maulino team, the Argentine defender played in Chile for Unión San Felipe.

In total, the former River Plate player completed eight seasons in our country, which allowed him to obtain dual nationality. After leaving Talcahuano, the central defender played five years at Sporting Cristal in Peru, a club from which he left as an idol.

In his emotional Instagram post, Omar Merlo dedicated words to all the clubs he defended and left a special dedication to all of Chile.

Omar Merlo’s farewell words for Unión San Felipe, Huachipato and Curicó Unidos

Unión San Felipe: “It was a pivotal club in my career, feeling again that you are important in a team. A tough, but spectacular year. A new country for us that would give me and my family so much joy. Thank you!”

Huachipato: “What can I say about this club? It changed our lives forever, in sports and as a family. Many joys and also some sadness, but the love they gave us made every moment worth it. We made history, ‘Champion of the South’. It will be engraved in our hearts. Thank you!”

Curicó Unidos: “And finally in Curi we had the most difficult battle and the one that will surely make us all stronger. Another difficult year, but where you cling more to the people you love and the friendships that are always there. To everyone who accompanied, thank you.”
