On holiday in Scotland for the May 1st long weekend, a 32-year-old Italian dies due to an infection

Mauro Carminati, a 32-year-old mathematical engineer who had arrived in Scotland on holiday a few days ago, died on Friday in Edinburgh from the consequences of an infection.

This was reported today by the Eco di Bergamo to which Mauro’s aunt, Marina, told what happened. That in Scotland was a holiday that Mauro had dreamed of for a long time, so the thirty-two year old, originally from Stezzano, in the province of Bergamo, and employed at Lamborghini, took advantage of the long weekend and left on 26 April.

He was supposed to stay for only five days but on the 26th he noticed swelling in his leg, which turned black. So he went to the hospital. The infection spread and reached his lungs, causing pneumonia.

Mauro was transferred to intensive care. And on May 1st, mother Cinzia, father Fabrizio and aunt arrived. «He was still lucid and speaking, then the fever rose and a cerebral hemorrhage occurred – explained Marina – initially the doctors thought that there was a bacterium at the origin and they gave him three cycles of antibiotics, which however did not given the desired outcomes. They then realized that the source of the infection was actually a virus. Mauro was very well, he enjoyed excellent health: it was a bolt from the blue. If he had suspected he was unwell, he wouldn’t even have left for this short holiday that he had dreamed of for so long.”

Bachelor’s degree obtained with 110 cum laude from the Polytechnic of Milan, and the master’s degree always obtained with top marks from the University of Munich, Mauro had worked for four years in the Audi headquarters in Ingolstadt before returning to Italy in 2020 and start work at Lamborghini in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

For this reason, during the week Mauro – passionate about trekking, photography and travel – lived in Crevalcore, in the province of Bologna.

On Tuesday 7 May the consulate will release the documents for the repatriation of the body. Then the funeral will be arranged and the many who knew and respected Mauro, now shocked by this sudden death, will be able to give him their final farewell.
