Sandra Hülser is nominated for best actress at the 2024 Oscars. Director Ilker Çatak received a nomination in the Best International Film category for the Hamburg film “The Teacher’s Room”.
Since the world premieres of “Anatomy of a Case” and “The Zone of Interest,” Sandra Hülser has been on everyone’s lips. The films won top prizes at Cannes. Huller won the Best Actress award at the European Film Awards. Now both films are nominated in the premier category of Best Film at the Oscars. Sandra Hülser also has her first Oscar nomination as an actress: In the best female lead actress category, she competes with Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Cary Mulligan (“Maestro”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) and Annette Bening (“Nyad”). The Süddeutsche Zeitung predicts that Hülser could now finally become an international star.
“Anatomy of a Case”: Mother suspected of murder
In the French legal drama “Anatomy of a Case”, Hülser plays the suspected murder mother and author whose husband dies under unclear circumstances after a fall. In the British production “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer, Hülser plays the wife of concentration camp commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), who calls her the “Queen of Auschwitz”. There, the couple and several children built a life with a blooming garden directly behind the walls of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Filmmaker lker Çatak is also happy. His drama “The Teacher’s Room,” which was largely shot in Hamburg, is nominated for the 2024 Oscars as best international film along with four other productions. The five-time “Lola” award-winning drama “The Teacher’s Room” is about a teacher in a moral dilemma. The film was funded by the Moin Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein. In August 2023, the foreign representation of German Films (German Films) chose the film produced by Ingo Fliess as Germany’s Oscar hope.
The script was written by Çatak and his friend from school days, Johannes Duncker. The main actress is the Hamburg-born actress Leonie Benesch, Çatak is a graduate of the Hamburg Media School and has shot several films in the Hanseatic city, such as “The spoken word counts” and “Once upon a time Indian Country.”

Oscars: Wim Wenders nominated for a feature film for the first time
Another German is nominated: Wim Wenders is representing Japan at the Oscars this year – with his film “Perfect Days”, which was shot in Tokyo. It’s about a philosophizing toilet cleaner. Wenders presented the film at the Hamburg Film Festival in October 2023. “The Oscar nominations have rarely been this exciting from a German perspective,” commented the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” on the nominations of the two films and of Sandra Hülser as best actress.
Wim Wenders has already been nominated for a documentary Oscar three times: in 2000 with the musician documentary “Buena Vista Social Club”, in 2012 with the 3D dance film “Pina” about Pina Bausch and in 2015 with the documentary “The Salt of the Earth” about the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. According to the agency, the director said about his current nomination: “And then suddenly you’re really happy.”

Oscars will be awarded on March 10th in Los Angeles
With a total of 13 nominations, Christopher Nolan’s drama “Oppenheimer” leads ahead of “Poor Things” (eleven nominations), Killers of the Flower Moon (ten nominations) and “Barbie”. The comedy is represented in eight categories, but Greta Gerwig is not nominated for best director. The 96th Academy Awards will take place on March 10 in Los Angeles. This year’s ceremony will be moderated by Jimmy Kimmel, who presented the Oscars gala in 2017, 2018 and 2023.
