Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS) highlighted, in a speech this Monday (4), International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8. The parliamentarian highlighted that Brazil is one of the countries with the highest number of femicides. He also recalled that women, in addition to being forced to work double or even triple shifts, also suffer from wage inequality.
— Despite the advances achieved over the years, such as the right to vote, the promulgation of the Maria da Penha Law and female representation in politics, among other sectors, we are still far from ideal. We have a long way to go. Brazilian society is moving slowly, if not stagnant, towards full citizenship and equal rights, especially with regard to the end of patriarchy.
Paim cited data from the Brazilian Public Security Forum that shows that a case of femicide is registered every six and a half hours in Brazil, and a woman is attacked every two minutes. The parliamentarian also stated that 62% of femicide victims are black. He also drew attention to the participation of women in the job market, highlighting that “the female presence decreases as the position increases”.
— The fight of Brazilian women against prejudice, discrimination and violence is daily. We have to support them. It’s time to say enough to the indifference and ignorance that perpetuates these evils. It’s time to become aware and act. We can no longer allow such violence, such neglect, such disrespect.
The senator cited projects he authored on the subject, such as the one that proposes the adoption of equal rules and criteria between men and women regarding the issue of salary remuneration and job quality (PL 1.372/2021). For Paim, it is important to rebuild the country based on the recognition, appreciation and guarantee of women’s rights, ensuring spaces of equality in all sectors of society.
