According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more people in Germany, among others, have recently become infected with parrot disease. The WHO said there was an increase in cases around Hanover last year. In 2023, 14 confirmed cases were reported across Germany, and five more were reported by the end of February. Pathogens for the infectious disease, also known as ornithosis, are found primarily in parrots, pigeons, seagulls and other birds. The infection is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or by inhaling fecal dust, for example when cleaning cages. According to the US health authority CDC, human-to-human transmission is very rare. Infected people often report flu-like symptoms, but the disease can also cause severe pneumonia. The WHO currently assesses the risks to humans as low.
