As of February 5, 2024, a new rotation scheme has been established for the vehicle restriction program, known as pico y placa, in Medellín and its metropolitan area.
On Monday, April 1, this measure will affect private vehicles and two- and four-stroke motorcycles whose license plates end in the numbers 5 and 8, with a restriction in effect from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
According to the Medellín Mobility Secretariat, the main objective of this modification is to promote the development of socioeconomic activities in both the public and private sectors, energizing the local economy, strengthening commerce and promoting tourism in the city.
The Mayor’s Office of Medellín and the administrations of the municipalities of the metropolitan area of the capital of Antioquia will apply peak and plate sanctioning measures as follows:
- For private vehicles with plates ending in the digits 5 and 8, the circulation restriction will be from 5:00 am to 8:00 pm
- For 2- and 4-stroke motorcycles with plates that begin with the digits 5 and 8, the same time restriction will apply, from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

According to the union, the biweekly rotation methodology will remain in force, with the day of the week varying each month. This rotation will be applied exclusively on business days, following the sequence established since 2016.

What is the fine for violating the license plate in Medellín?
According to the National Traffic Code, those who do not comply with the peak and license plate measurement in Medellín, whether today or on other days, will be subject to a fine of $650,000.
The Ministry of Mobility has enabled the option so that hybrid vehicles can request exemption from this measure through the website www.medellin.gov.co/es/tramites-y-servicios/exencion-de-pico-y-placa.
