BEIJING – A nuclear arsenal nearly quadrupled by 2027: 700 warheads. Even quintupled, reaching a thousand, by the end of the decade. This is the alarm raised yesterday by the Pentagon in its annual report on Beijing’s military might. Which comes just weeks after the launch – revealed by the Financial Times and denied twenty-four hours later by the Chinese Foreign Ministry – of a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile.
The report, prepared by the Department of Defense for the US Congress, reveals a significant increase compared to what the Pentagon itself wrote in its report last year, when estimates spoke “only” of a doubling of Chinese newspapers compared to the current slightly less than 200.
