Pesaro, ready to become Capital of Culture 2024. Ovation for Mattarella: “Culture against the monopoly of single thought” – News

“Many will come to Pesaro to meet you, to learn about your historical-artistic heritage. It is a consequence of that circularity of culture which does not tolerate restrictions or borders, which demands respect for the options of every citizen, which rejects the claim of public powers or large corporations, to direct sensibilities towards the monopoly of a single thought. If culture is knowledge, creativity, emotion, passion, feeling, well, it is the prerequisite of our freedoms, including that of being together”. Thus Sergio Mattarella, at the inauguration of Pesaro, Italian capital of culture 2024.

“We are going through a difficult period, dramatic in many respects, in which man seems obstinately bent on destroying what he has built, on vilifying his own dignity. The wars being fought on the borders of Europe concern us”, he said. added Mattarella. “Not only because the wind of deaths, destruction, hatred travels distances more rapidly than weapons do and affects our lives, our economies and our consciences”. But “because Europe has written the word peace into its identity”. This calls “the rulers to responsibility”.

“It is the culture expressed in all these places, with its different sensitivities and its irreducibility to alleged stereotypes, that is at the basis of all this. Culture, free from any ideology, never separated from daily life and from the whole of the rights and duties set out in the Constitution. Rights and duties that make us and make us feel like participants in the national community, to which we give life with our diversity”, said Mattarella.

The president continued: “That culture which, precisely due to the nature of the historical processes that have characterized the progressive evolution of Italy, is made up of relationships with neighboring countries, with other peoples, with aspirations specific to the European dimension. The culture of the hundred courts, of the autonomous municipalities, of the many patrons who gave life to the incomparable cultural heritage that Italy offers to the world today. A civilization founded on humanism, which speaks to the world having managed to lay dignity at its foundations and the freedom of the person, equality of rights, solidarity participation in the common good”.

From the cultural heritage, “from the civilization that has arisen from it, comes a call for responsibility”, said Mattarella. “Responsibility – she added – to capitalize on the value of cultural freedom today and for the future, together with the awareness that it is an indivisible heritage for all humanity”.
