Peter Kloeppel and Ulrike von der Groeben are retiring from RTL. On “RTL Aktuell” the presenter explains: “The farewell doesn’t happen so quickly.”
For more than 30 years, Peter Kloeppel, 65, and Ulrike von der Groeben, 66, were the presenter duo of the RTL news program “RTL Aktuell”. After Kloeppel’s interview with “Stern”, the two now address the audience directly with the big announcement.
It’s official: Peter Kloeppel and Ulrike von der Groeben are quitting
Like almost every evening, Peter Kloeppel and Ulrike von der Groeben will be beaming at the viewers at 6:45 p.m. on the “RTL Aktuell” program, but the edition from March 12, 2024 is something special – the two will soon stop. As usual, the news is read out first and the presenter has her say about the sport. At first they don’t talk about their end.
Shortly before the end the time has come: “And if you somehow noticed today that Peter and I are leaving ‘RTL aktuell’: That’s true! But not until August,” said the 66-year-old finally. The moderator reinforces her words. “Until then you have a little more,” he explains further, because the farewell “isn’t happening so quickly.”
No more “RTL aktuell”
Before the big announcement on TV, an interview with the presenter was published in “Stern”. At 65 years old, Kloeppel says that things are now “good.” Although he can still imagine individual moderation jobs – he will hand over the daily news, which has informed viewers about the latest events for more than three decades. “My last show is at the end of August,” he announces.

His departure as presenter also allows Peter Kloeppel to spend more time with his family in the USA. He found a second home there for a long time. “They only know me there as Peter from Germany – not as a TV person.”
Ulrike von der Groeben will also be leaving RTL
His long-time colleague Ulrike von der Groeben will also be retiring. She has been responsible for sport at RTL Nachrichten for 35 years. “I will miss her. She is much louder and funnier than me, much more impulsive,” Kloeppel openly admits.
Von der Groeben admits to RTL: “The decision was very difficult for me, but after almost 40 years at RTL and over 30 of them together with Peter Kloeppel at ‘RTL Aktuell’, it is time to say goodbye. Saying goodbye is easier, because we’re going together and we still have until August to get used to it.”
The viewers will certainly miss the friendly moderation team.
