GLOBO found that Piquerez’s flight was initially scheduled for this Monday, at 3 pm (Brasília time). However, the Uruguayan Football Federation sent an email to the club and a message to the player yesterday, with a new schedule, and the transfer was rescheduled for the 17th.
The rescheduling would force the left-back to board immediately. Palmeiras tried to resolve the problem with the Uruguayan Federation and was willing to arrange another flight for Piquerez, but Marcelo Bielsa’s technical committee opted to cancel the call.
According to Uruguay’s portals, the team has Mathías Olivera, from Napoli, and Matías Viña, from Flamengo, for the position. Therefore, coach Marcelo Bielsa decided not to call up another player to replace Piquerez.
Piquerez was among the names “reserved” by Bielsa for the Uruguay team, who kept the final list confidential until the presentation of the delegation. Some of the players traveled on Thursday and the first to arrive in San Sebastián, Spain, was goalkeeper Randall Rodríguez, from Peñarol.
Uruguay’s matches will be against the Basque Country, on March 23, at the San Mamés stadium, in Bilbao, and the second will be on March 26, against the Ivory Coast, at the Bollaert-Delelis stadium, in Lens, France .
