Prambanan Resident Dies Due to Leptospirosis

Harianjogja.com, SLEMAN—The Sleman Health Service recorded one case of death due to leptospirosis. The public is also asked to be aware of the potential spread of disease, one of which is caused by rat urine.

Head of the Sleman Health Service, Cahya Purnama, said that as of mid-March, eight residents had contracted leptospirosis. Of this number, one resident was declared dead.

“There are three suspects. “Deaths due to leptospirosis occurred in February,” Cahya told reporters, Sunday (24/3/2024).

He explained that the findings of leptospirosis cases were spread across several Kapanewon. For example, in Kapanewon Prambanan and Cangkringan there are two cases each and in Kapanewon Moyudan, Gamping, Tempel and Pakem there is one case each. “The death case occurred in Kapanewon Prambanan,” he said.

Cahya said that leptospirosis is categorized as zoonotic because it can be transmitted to humans through animals. Usually, this disease is caused by rat urine which contains leptospirosis bacteria.

Therefore, he asked people in agricultural and fishing areas to be more careful. To reduce the risk of spread, you can use personal protective equipment such as gloves and shoes when doing activities.

“This is also a seasonal disease, especially during the rainy season because the threat of transmission is higher.

Head of Disease Prevention and Control, Sleman Health Service, Khamidah Yuliati asked the public to be aware of the threat of the spread of leptospirosis. This is because the number of cases found could still increase, especially during the rainy season, the threat of transmission is also higher. “Case findings can appear at any time,” he said.

Yuli said, in 2023 there were 60 Sleman residents who tested positive for leptospirosis. Of this number, six people were declared dead. “So we must remain alert to the threat of leptospirosis,” he said.

Yuli explained that the threat of leptospirosis is closely related to environmental cleanliness. One of the causes of the spread is due to rat urine containing leptospira bacteria.

Therefore, he continued, people are still asked to keep the environment around their homes clean. On the other hand, the Community Health Movement (Germas) campaign will also continue to be promoted.

“A clean and healthy lifestyle is something that must be followed. “Eat and drink with balanced nutrition so that the body’s immunity is good so it is not easily attacked by disease,” he said.
