In the last league round, Ipswich needed just one point to secure promotion. All matches in the final round kicked off at 1.30pm.

Leeds in 3rd place was dependent on a Huddersfield victory, as well as winning themselves over Southampton.

Neither happened. Leeds lost 1–2 to Southampton and thus have to go into the playoffs.

Thus, former Solskjær assistant McKenna was Solskjær’s assistant at Manchester United from 2018-2021. Kieran McKenna led Ipswich back to the Premier League for the first time in 22 years. The club was relegated in the 2001/02 season. Since then, the club has largely been far from returning to the top division.

Kieran McKenna

– It is an enormous amount of work that has been done. A lot has been sacrificed and there has been enormous support from many. The performance will probably sink in within a few days, says McKenna to Sky Sports after the match.

Ipswich finished a point behind Leicester, who secured promotion in the penultimate league round. Leicester lost 0–2 in their last match against Blackburn.

Watch the tribute from superstar Ed Sheeran in the video below. The 33-year-old grew up in Suffolk, where Ipswich is based, and has been the club’s kit sponsor since 2021. In Sheeran’s first year at the club, it took just four months for Ipswich to set a record for the number of home kits sold in the club’s history, writes The Athletic.

It is also the first time since 2012 that a team has moved straight up from League One to the Premier League two seasons in a row. Southampton managed the same feat back then.

Ipswich join Leicester City in the Premier League. Leeds, Southampton, West Bromwich and Norwich will play a playoff for the last Premier League place.

This is how the Premier League playoffs are played

The playoffs are played as two “semi-finals” over two games:

  • 3rd place (Leeds) against 6th place (Norwich): played on 12 and 16 May.
  • and 4th place (Southampton) against 5th place (West Brom): played on 12 and 17 May.

The winners of the “semi-finals” will meet for the final at Wembley for the last Premier League place on 26 May.

Ipswich won the league in the 1961/62 season, and came second in both the 1980/81 and 1981/82 seasons.

After relegation from the Premier League in the 2001/02 season, Ipswich played in the second-highest division until the 2018/19 season – when they moved down to League OneLevel three.

McKenna took over as head coach in December 2021. At the time, the club was in 12th place in League One. That season they finished in 11th place.

Last season they were promoted directly to the Championship after finishing second in League One.
