A boat capsized north of an uninhabited island near Puerto Rico. Authorities confirmed the deaths of 11 people, while another 31 were rescued. The boat was spotted more than 18 kilometers north of the uninhabited island of Desecheo, which is located off the west coast of Puerto Rico.
It is unclear how many people were on board when it capsized, US Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said, adding that a “mass rescue” was still underway. “We are trying to save as many people as possible and find as many survivors as possible.”
At least eight Haitians were taken to hospital, although the nationalities of all people on board the boat are not known.
