The main tennis tournament in South America, the Rio Open starts this Saturday (17), in Rio de Janeiro. The competition will bring together two Grand Slam champions and will be played at the Jockey Club.
This weekend the Qualifying matches take place. The final of the Rio Open, one of the 13 ATP 500 level tournaments on the 2024 international calendar, will be on the 25th of this month.
This year’s edition will feature two stars who have already won some of the circuit’s main titles. The main one will be the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, former number 1 in the world (and current number 2), champion of the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2023.
At the Rio Open, Alcaraz has already reached two finals, and won the title in 2022 — last year, he was runner-up.
The other Grand Slam champion who will compete in the competition is Swiss Stan Wawrinka, who won three Grand Slam trophies in his career: Australian Open in 2014, against Rafael Nadal, and Roland Garros (2015) and US Open (2016), against Novak Djokovic.
Among the Brazilians, there will be at least four Brazilians in the main draw: Thiago Wild, Thiago Monteiro, João Fonseca and Gustavo Heide. Felipe Meligeni, Matheus Pucinelli and João Lucas Reis, who will be in the qualifying race and could join the others.
