Russian dissident Oleg Orlov has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for “discrediting the Russian armed forces” over an article in which he criticized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The article had been published in November 2022 on the French news site Mediapart. Orlov, who is 70 years old, is co-president of the international human rights organization Memorial: the organization was dissolved in Russia in 2021 (the association continues to operate abroad, but Orlov remained in Russia) and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. Orlov had already been sentenced at first instance to pay a fine, but on appeal he was sentenced to prison, after the prosecution appealed.
