Nearly two years after winning gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been disqualified and banned from Olympic competition for four years.
The 17-year-old Russian girl, who tested positive for a banned substance during an anti-doping test, finally heard, two years after the Beijing Winter Games, the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Russian and her teammates will lose the gold medal won in the team event, which will be awarded to the United States.
Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, used to treat angina pectoris, in an anti-doping control, carried out in December 2021, at a test in Russia. However, the result was only known in February 2022, a few hours after the team event at the Winter Games, in Beijing.
Valieva claimed that it was a contaminated sample because it was a product that her grandfather took for his heart problems. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport followed the recommendation of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which asked that the skater be banned for a period of four years, starting from the date of the positive test, a sanction that will end in December 2025.
The decision comes less than two years before the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
