Samuel Stern: “The Child of the Abyss”

On the coast of Scotland, where there is a community of ā€œLucht siuilā€, the walking people, a woman who seems to have come from the sea is found unconscious. She asks her, after she has come to her senses and shown a friendly attitude, to track down Samuel.

When the Red One arrives in the community, he recognizes the woman as Arabella Carlyle but was convinced that she was dead. The head of the community, Syd, warns Samuel that since the arrival of this young woman, many of her have closed in on themselves, like a curse but all this does not come from her, it was already inside them.

Arabella was under the influence of Ailith, she has returned from the abyss from which she sees things with different eyes.

When a mysterious figure appears on the beach, which presents itself as the voice of the angelic conscience Tzaphkiel, prince of faces, guardian of divine memories. This reveals to him that Arabella is no longer a woman but matter that has emerged from the shadows, like demonsā€¦.

As in previous books, of this mysterious and intriguing Apocalypse of the Red, we are shown a story in which reality and dreamlike aspects merge and everything is wrapped in a patina of fog that disorientates the reader but at the same time involves him in a whirlwind of events in which Samuelā€™s path becomes increasingly tortuous but aware of a growing strength in him to face the darkness of the Abyss.

Samuel Stern ā€œThe Son of the Abyssā€ with drawings by Lisa Salsi and screenplay by Massimiliano Filadoro and Marco Savegnago, cover by Valerio Piccioni, Maurizio Di Vincenzo and Emiliano Tanzillo, published by Bugs Comics.

In the pages you are transported into the darkest and most inaccessible depths of the soul of each protagonist, you are faced with a situation where good does not exist but evil does not exist either, there is a melting pot of feelings, of emotions that transport the characters , as if they were at the mercy of the waves, sometimes on one side, other times on the other, finding themselves with strong doubts.

Who are the demons, who are the angels. We are not told we know yet but in any case, the suspense in seeking an answer will lead to new discoveries being revealed.

This issue, supported by a sublime, delicate and harmonious design, highlights the Shakespearean drama even more, a comic that becomes a theatrical work where one is well aware, from the beginning, that the ending will not be happy but a defeat for everyone.

An intense reading, in which the horror aspect has now given way to a poetic-dramaturgical connotation, because all those who took to the field have something to say and above all to experience.
