Score 1-1, Indonesian National Team Makes History of Qualifying for the Top 16 of the Asian Cup

Harianjogja.com, JOGJA—The result of the match between Kyrgyzstan and Oman with a score of 1-1 was a joy for the Indonesian national team. The match, which took place at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium on Thursday (25/1/2024) evening, resulted in both teams being eliminated in the 2023 Asian Cup. However, this result actually put Indonesia through to the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup.

With this draw, Oman had to swallow the bitter pill by only finishing with 2 points in Group F, while Indonesia finished with 3 points in Group D. So the Indonesian National Team made history for the first time advancing to the round of 16 through the best third place scheme.

It was Joel Kojo, a player from the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, who destroyed Oman’s dream of becoming the winner in the match and at the same time made Indonesia the winner. Even though Oman took the lead first through the opening goal in the 8th minute through Muhsen Al Ghassani’s kick.

Based on the official report on the AFC website, Oman took full control and the Kyrgyz Republic had to work hard not to concede. But the Central Asian side should have equalized in the 27th minute when Gulzhigit Alykulov teed up Farkhat Musabekov, the midfielder’s unmarked shot flying over the crossbar.

The White Falcons survived another threat just before the end of the first half, when Oman almost doubled their lead through Ahmed Al Kaabi’s free kick, but the effort was saved by Kyrgyzstan goalkeeper Tokotaev.

In the second half Kyrgyzstan were more determined and thought they had restored parity when substitute Beknaz Almazbekov’s cross into the box was headed neatly into the net by striker Kojo, only to be ruled out by VAR.

Oman responded with Salaah Al Yahyaei running down the left wing before giving Ghassani a chance but defender Al Seeb was too slow to react, allowing Tamirlan Kozubaev to secure the ball. Oman increased the pressure through the efforts of Abdul Rahman Al Mushaifri and Arshad Al Alawi.
