The football fairy tale about Ivory Coast continues. After the hosts were on the verge of elimination in the home tournament and had already fired the coach, the Ivorians made it to the knockout phase at the last minute and thanks to the help of the shooters.
Defending champions Senegal had to believe in the round of 16 and Mali in the quarter-finals. And in the semi-finals, the “elephants” didn’t let themselves be stopped by the DR Congo (with Charles Pickel and YB striker Meschack Elia).
Haller with a lucky goal to become the match winner
Sébastien Haller became the celebrated match winner. The Borussia Dortmund attacker scored with a direct pass. He didn’t catch the ball quite cleanly, which resulted in an arc that was out of reach for Congo keeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau.

Ivory Coast will face Nigeria in the final. The “Super Eagles” are in the final of the continental championships for the first time since 2013.
Nigeria wins penalty thriller
The Nigerians won 4-2 on penalties against the previous surprise team South Africa. Kelechi Iheanacho from Leicester City converted the decisive penalty to advance to the final.
After regular time, the score was 1-1 after two penalty goals from Nigerian William Troost-Ekong (67th minute) and Teboho Mokoena (90th). In the subsequent extra time, both teams remained without a goal.
