After a long wait of 23 years, Servette will once again taste the exhilaration of a Swiss Cup final. The Garnet will face Lugano on June 2 at Wankdorf. Servette qualified thanks to their 1-0 success in Winterthur. It was acquired following a success from Timothé Cognat in the 88th minute.
The Garnets were fortunate to score on their first real opportunity. This goal was the work of a player who had already been decisive in the Conference League at Razgrad, where he scored the qualifying goal. He was also brought in by the two men who are undoubtedly the two best Servetti players of the season. Timothé Cognat armed an unstoppable strike from the left after a cross from Keigo Tsunemoto which had been shifted by Steve Rouiller.
This qualification for the final of the Swiss Cup rewards the Grenat’s very good season. But it will only be magnificent if Servette FC wins on June 2. The past speaks in favor of the Genevans, who beat Lugano 2-0 in 1971 in the only final to date between the two teams.
The round back
Rounded back for almost half an hour before putting his nose to the window: such was Servette FC’s approach for this semi-final. The memory of the two Super League matches, the 3-3 on January 23 and the 1-0 defeat on March 30, was still very present in the minds of the Grenat. Not exposing oneself to adverse ruptures was the watchword.
With two headers from Takuma Nishimura and two attempts from Bendeguz Bolla, Servette FC did not forget to remind us at the end of the first period why it was the logical favorite of the match. But he hadn’t done enough yet to really deserve to win it.
Until the 88th minute, the scenario did not change. René Weiler’s men certainly had the initiative in the game, without however fully giving in. They waited for the right moment to strike, the moment when their individualities could finally make their class speak. Because Timothé Cognat really has class!
