As in the cup semi-finals, Servette also has the upper hand over Winterthur in the championship. Geneva won the first game of the championship round 2-1 and kept the race for the title open.
In the cup, it took until the penultimate minute of regular time before the people of Geneva could celebrate. Coach René Weiler’s team set off fireworks right at the start – on the pitch, of course.
Enzo Crivelli and David Douline scored after two and four minutes respectively, giving them a comfortable lead early on. Winterthur’s goalie Marvin Keller didn’t cut a good figure with both goals. Before the 1-0, he cleared a cross from Bendeguz Bolla inadequately and into the feet of Crivelli. When the score was 2-0, the 22-year-old let a corner cross bounce forward. Douline made no effort to push the ball over the line.
As a result, Servette managed the lead cleverly. Substitute Dylan Bronn missed the decision after coming on in the 83rd minute when he hit the post. It was only in the final phase that the guests appeared more courageous – and were promptly rewarded with the goal from Randy Schneider in the 87th minute. Sayfallah Ltaief negligently missed the possible equalizer just seconds later. He missed with his head from the best position.
While Servette failed to win against Winterthur in three previous duels this season, the Geneva team have now triumphed twice over Patrick Frame’s team within six days. With four games to go, the French-speaking Swiss are five points behind leaders YB, who face Zurich on Sunday.
