Since when is May 10 celebrated in Mexico?

How did Mother’s Day come about in Mexico?

The celebration of Mother’s Day has been commemorated in our country since 1922 at the initiative of the then Secretary of Public Education, the journalist Rafael Alducín, founder of Excélsior, a newspaper in which a call was published so that “on May 10 of all years were consecrated by their children to exalt in life or in memory those who gave them being.”

This call was well received by the then President of the Republic, Álvaro Obregón, becoming a commemorative date that over the years managed to take root among Mexicans.

Mother’s Day around the world

Of course, this celebration is not exclusive to Mexico, it is a celebration present in almost the entire world. It is believed that the first commemoration of this type took place in ancient Greece and was a tribute to Rhea, mother of the gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.

One of the origins of the date is linked to the United States, in this version it is said that it was established by Anna Jarvis in 1908, in honor of her mother, Ann Jarvis, a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers in both sides of the Civil War and created the Mother’s Day Work Club to address public health issues.

According to the UN, Mother’s Day is currently celebrated in more than 80 countries around the world.
