Tottenham Hotspur beat Aston Villa 4-0 in the Premier League this season. The additional three points maintain Ange Postecoglou’s team’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Playing at Villa Park, Sunday (10/3/2024), the match was boring in the first half. However, the situation changed drastically in the second half when the visitors appeared to surprise the hosts.

James Maddison opened the scoring in the 50th minute, followed by Brennan Johnson three minutes later. John McGinn’s red card in the 65th minute made it easier for Spurs to control the match. As a result, Son Heung-min scored a goal in the 90th minute, followed by Timo Werner during injury time.

The course of the match

Aston Villa had the first chance in the 15th minute, but Youri Tielemans’ close-range shot was blocked by Pedro Porro. Seven minutes later, it was Leon Bailey’s long-range shot that was blocked by Maddison.

Aston Villa had another golden opportunity in the 29th minute, this time through wing-back Matty Cash from inside the penalty box, but the Polish player’s shot went wide of the target.

Tottenham’s first shot came in the 35th minute. Maddison fired a shot from a corner kick, but it was blocked by Ollie Watkins. In the 43rd minute, Johnson’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Ezri Konsa intended to feed Tielemans, but it was immediately snatched by Dejan Kulusevski. The ball was passed to Son’s feet and then passed back to Johnson. With one kick, Johnson shook Aston Villa’s goal.

The hosts’ efforts to catch up became increasingly difficult after McGinn was given a straight red card in the 65th minute following a hard tackle on Destiny Udogie. In a 10 vs 11 situation, Aston Villa is getting worse.

Son scored Tottenham’s third goal in the 90th minute. The South Korean striker finished a measured cross from Kulusevski with a hard shot that hit the Aston Villa goal without Martinez being able to block it.

Timo Werner, who only entered at the end of normal time, also scored a goal against Aston Villa in the 90+4 minute. The German striker completed Son’s bait from the left side with a shot into the right corner of Martinez’s goal. The 4-0 score lasted until the end.
