According to Agence France-Presse, on the 21st local time, the Ministry of Agriculture of Sri Lanka stated that in order to ensure food security, it will immediately end the ban on all agrochemicals including herbicides and pesticides, which marks the country’s comprehensive organic agriculture. The reforms lasted only 6 months.

Since the ban on the import of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was first implemented in May, large tracts of farmland across Sri Lanka have been abandoned. In the past week, the prices of rice, vegetables and other staple foods in Sri Lanka have all doubled, and the shortage has worsened. Supermarkets everywhere also implement quantitative sales of rice, and each customer can only buy 5 kilograms of rice. Last month, due to insufficient organic fertilizers, both the quality and yield of tea declined. The Sri Lankan government resumed the import of some chemical fertilizers used in tea cultivation.
