The resignation of the President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, was formally accepted. This was announced by the President of the Parliament.
“Gotabaya has officially resigned,” he told reporters.
This is an expected decision, after his flight to the Maldives a few days ago, which followed months of protests over the worst economic crisis in national history.
After thousands of protesters stormed his official residence on Saturday, Rajapaksa promised he would step down from his post, paving the way for a “peaceful transition” of power.
Rajapaksa benefits from presidential immunity and can use it to seek refuge abroad. The 73-year-old president had left with his wife and a bodyguard aboard a military plane.
