Tokyo slightly up, Shanghai just below parity

1′ reading

The Tokyo Stock Exchange begins the session with a slight increase, despite the mixed closing of the US stock indices, in a context of volatility and awaiting further macroeconomic data from the continent. At the opening, the Nikkei recorded a slightly positive change of 0.14% at 39,859.44, adding 56 points. On the currency front, caution still prevails in view of a possible intervention by the Japanese monetary authorities to prevent the devaluation of the yen, to 151.50, and the euro to 162.70.

The Chinese stock markets, however, open the session just below parity: the Shanghai Composite index initially loses 0.04%, to 3,076.17 points, while that of Shenzhen loses 0.16%, to 1,786.34 points .

On the contrary, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange soars in the early stages of the session as it returns to trading after the holiday break, encouraged by US inflation deemed incapable of altering the Federal Reserve’s plans for cutting interest rates expected in 2024: the Hang Seng index rises by 2.31%, to 16,924.16 points. The price lists also benefit from the good trend of technology stocks and in particular the electric vehicle sector. Xiaomi, for example, rose by 14.99% after the Chinese giant of smartphones and other consumer goods announced last week the launch of its electric car. Also in the spotlight were Li Auto (+1.15%) and the world leader in the sector Byd (+2.48%).
