Huawei and the Finnish operator Lounea have launched the commercial passive optical network 50G in a residential context. The collaboration between the two companies has made it possible to introduce the 50G PON technology developed by Huawei in a wide range of scenarios, from homes to businesses through industrial districts.
The new generation PON technology called “PON 50G” dall’ITU-T – l’International Telecommunication Union – Telecommunication Standardization Bureaui.e. the body that regulates telecommunications in the world – is capable of offering users speeds that exceed 40 gigabits and supporting optical access at over 10 gigabits, as well as guaranteeing same speed both in download and upload.
For the occasion, a test was carried out in which the Finnish YouTuber Justus “LeappaVika” Jokinen participated, the first in the world to stream at 40 Gbps in a common context such as the domestic one. The fact that I had the unique opportunity to test the new technology in an absolute preview was seen as a real privilege for LeappaVika:
I am the first person in Finland, as well as in the whole world, to have tested this type of interface. […] I can watch Netflix or 4K videos on YouTube while a game downloads in the background, without any kind of problem. Not to mention the possibility of carrying out high-quality live streaming sessions without data loss.
The new generation 50G PON commercial solution, compared to the previous one presented at the Mobile World Congress 2023, is characterized by a 5x greater bandwidth and 100x lower latency. Furthermore, it is the first with symmetric bandwidth, i.e. capable of guaranteeing the same upload and download speed. The solution also boasts a optical power very high of 32 dB, capable of significantly increasing the transmission distance, as well as being able to be implemented in a single step without compromising on-demand service updates.
