Surprise in Miami: Dimitrov makes Alcaraz “like a…

The Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov surprisingly defeated world number two Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami.

On Thursday (local time), Dimitrow moved into the semi-finals after a convincing 6:2,6:4 in 1:33 hours and will meet the German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, who had previously beaten Fabian Marozsan from Hungary.

“I felt like I was 13 on the court, Grigor was that strong,” said the top-seeded Spaniard. “It was crazy. He played incredible tennis, almost perfect. I couldn’t find any solutions.” The unexpected defeat could cost Alcaraz second place in the world rankings if Italian Jannik Sinner wins the tournament. Sinner will play against Russian defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

The 32-year-old Dimitrow, currently ranked twelfth in the ATP rankings and number eleven in Miami, could return to the top 10 for the first time since 2018 with another win. However, Zverev has won seven of the eight duels with Dimitrow so far.

The women’s final has been decided, where the American Danielle Collins, who will retire after this season, and Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan will meet on Saturday (local time). The unseeded Collins easily defeated Yekaterina Alexandrova from Russia 6:3.6:2. Rybakina, seeded number four, had more trouble with Viktoria Asarenka from Belarus and won 6:4.0:6.7:6(2).
