TAIPEI – At least 46 people died and another 55 were injured in a fire that broke out overnight in a 13-story building in southern Taiwan. Local media reports.
According to preliminary information, the building caught fire around 3 am (local time) in the Kaohsiung district and 159 firefighters intervened and put out the flames after almost 4 hours. According to authorities, the toll is at least 46 dead and 55 injured, but the number of victims could increase as some people were trapped between the seventh and 11th floors.
According to initial investigations, the fire broke out on the ground floor and quickly spread to the other floors. In the building, built 40 years ago, used partly as shops and partly as homes, one hundred people live and most of them are elderly people with mobility difficulties. Research continues while investigating the causes of the fire.
