Taiwan: new Chinese raid, 30 jets (20 fighters) in the air defense area

China has sent about thirty jets to the Taiwan defense area, including over 20 fighters: this is the second most massive air raid of the year, after the one last January 23 which involved 39 Chinese planes. The Taipei Defense Ministry reacted by deploying air defense missile systems in turn. Air raids from Beijing follow one another on a regular basis and, according to the US, they aim to keep the island under tension, which China considers part of its territory and is threatening to invade.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently cited airstrikes specifically as an example of “increasingly provocative rhetoric and activity”. Joe Biden’s US has explicitly expressed its intention to militarily defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. Last year Taiwan recorded 969 incursions by Chinese warplanes into its defense zone, more than double the approximately 380 carried out in 2020. The largest number of aircraft sent from China in a single day was recorded on the 4th. October 2021.
