Many foods can be enjoyed even after their best-before date has passed. Visitors to OFFA can try this out from April 17th to 21st, 2024.

As the city of St. Gallen reports, OFFA (Eastern Switzerland Spring and Exhibition Fair) visitors can learn how to assess the shelf life and condition of food at the Environment and Energy stand of the city of St.Gallen (Hall 9.1A).
On an adventure course you will find out which products are edible beyond the printed date and where you should be careful.
The truth in taste
You can put it to the test in a blind tasting.
Who can find out which of two identical products is fresh and which has expired?
Many packaged foods are thrown away just because the “best before” date has passed.
“Best before” – can be enjoyed for longer
If stored correctly, food can generally be consumed safely beyond the best before date (best before date) – sometimes up to a year.
Perishable goods can be frozen for three months until the printed use-by date (VD) and served without risk after thawing.
This is supported by two scientific guidelines that were created on behalf of the Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (FSVO).
However, once the “use by” date has been reached, food should be eaten immediately or frozen.
Cooking show about leftover bread
The environment and energy stand is run in collaboration with the organization foodwaste.ch and is integrated into the OFFA family course.
Families who answer the quiz questions about food receive an instant prize that helps them avoid food waste.
